Target group
+ Plastic surgeons
+ Maxillofacial surgeons
+ Ophthalmologists
+ Dermatologists
This talk is relevant to plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, ophthalmologists, and dermatologists.
+ Learn to locate and describe the bones, muscles, fat pads, blood vessels, and nerves of the periorbital region, and explain their functional relationships in both normal physiology and clinical practice.
+ Learn to relate the detailed anatomy of the eyelids and surrounding structures to common clinical conditions and surgical procedures, such as ptosis repair, blepharoplasty, and management of trauma, ensuring safe and effective patient care.
About the speaker
Prof. dr. Ronald L.A.W. Bleys is a leading clinical anatomist at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). He studied medicine at Utrecht University and graduated as a medical doctor in 1986. Shortly after, in 1987, he began his career in anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine — now UMC Utrecht — and has since developed into a multifaceted expert in education, anatomical research, and innovation.
In 1995, he obtained his PhD with the thesis “Innervation of the basal cerebral arteries: pathways and densities”, partly carried out at the anatomy department of the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London. In 1999, he became a certified medical-morphological researcher. He was appointed head of the Department of Anatomy in 2000 and, in February 2012, became full professor of Clinical Anatomy.
Research and Expertise
His research background is on the nerve supply of blood vessels. Currently he focuses on the interaction between the autonomic nervous system and the immune system and how this can be translated into clinical practice. He works closely with surgeons, for example in the field of esophageal cancer surgery, where detailed anatomical knowledge and new insights are essential for successful outcomes.
Innovation in Education
Prof. Bleys is a dedicated and highly respected teacher. In 2013, he received the Outstanding Teacher Award from Utrecht University. He is involved in innovations in anatomy education, including the development and implementation of virtual 3D anatomical models. He also leads a center of excellence for postgraduate anatomy training in the Netherlands, offering an extensive range of international courses.
Other Roles and Recognition
Ronald often receives invitations for (keynote) lectures for courses and congresses in The Netherlands and abroad. He has had several executive functions which show his dedication to the Academia. He is the current president of the Dutch Anatomical Society and has been president of the Faculty Club of Utrecht University for many years. He has received several international awards, including an honorary doctorate degree from Tbilisi State Medical University (2015) and the medal of honor from the Medical University of Varna (1997).
